College Counseling IntroductionIntroduction | Application Process Introduction | College Acceptances | College Search Tools | Finding the Best College | Planning Process Message from the College Counselor:Welcome to the Maine School of Science and Mathematics office of College Counseling! My portion of the MSSM community is a special one. Whereas it is the Admissions Office's job to bridge the gap between sending school and MSSM, it is my job to teach students to build their own bridge between MSSM and their future. With that goal in mind, it should not be surprising to hear that at MSSM we believe that the two most important parts of the college process for students are engagement and planning. Only by being thoroughly involved and invested will students be able to adequately prepare for the journey ahead. However, we also realize how daunting the prospect can be. That's where the planning aspect comes in. In addition to teaching Senior and Junior Seminars, the College Counseling office provides many other small workshops, College and College Representative Visits, and support literature to provide you with as much information as possible. We also take a look at the college process in a way that may be a little different from other schools. At MSSM, we fight hard against the tendency of colleges to turn applicants into commodities and against the student's tendency to see college admission as the only goal of education. We realize and teach that there is so much more to students and their education. In the pages that follow, you will find even more information that will help you and your parents make the best choices when planning for your future. Of course you should never hesitate to call my office (x.4010) or send me an email (mccartneym@mssm.org). Good luck! Michael D. McCartney Director of College Counseling |
