• Bio

  Dr. Brown holds separate degrees in Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, and Education (BS Ed, BS, MS, Ph.D. respectively). Over 30 years in education, he has taught in public secondary, private, gifted and talented, and magnet schools. He has been Science Curriculum Coordinator for a school district in Western Kansas and a Computer Science Curriculum Coordinator for a gifted and talented academy in Indiana. Early in his career, Dr. Brown was a Chemistry teacher, and also established one of the very first high school computer science programs in the state of Kansas.

  As a researcher, Dr. Brown's agenda is in Computers and Human Interaction (CHI). With the belief that high school students are capable of publication in professional journals, as well as presentations at professional conferences; a large number of his publications have shared co-authorship with either high school or university students (including a growing number of MSSM students). This contributed to him being named a 1994 Tandy Technology Scholar for Computer Science. He was also the first Kansas recipient of the Sigma Xi award for outstanding science teaching and research. As a recognized educator and researcher, Dr. Brown has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Computer Science Education and the Online Journal of Virtual Culture. He is currently on the program committee for the International E-Learn Conference sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Computers in Education (AACE).

  Dr. Brown is a past international president of the computer science group (sigCS) within the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and served on the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) K-12 Technology Task Force. Dr. Brown is known in ACM circles for having started and put in place the first high school student chapter of the ACM, a precedent that allowed other qualified high schools to follow with their own chapters. He was asked in 1995 to act as an International Educational Consultant in computer science to Al Ain University, the flagship University of the United Arab Emirates . He has held Associate Professorships at Kansas State University , Zayed University , and the American University in Dubai .

  On a personal level, Dr. Brown and his wife Carol reside on Trafton Avenue . They came to the MSSM following five years in the Middle East ( Dubai , United Arab Emirates ), where Dr. Brown was on the ground floor of establishing a national university for Emirati women. He is an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy when time allows and a player and researcher in the field of Massively Multi-player Online Games.

  In high school and college, Dr. Brown held two National, two World, two International, and six state Championships in the areas of Military Drum Majoring, Rifle Spinning, and Military Novelties. His private students readily outpaced his own record to give him the status of one of the top Military Nove lty instructors world-wide. He was invited to the Netherlands to conduct clinics and hold examinations in these areas in 1977. He has also been the chief clinician and director of these specialties at the International Peace Gardens Music Camp, Manitoba, Canada.

• Professional Interests

  Research and Publications are in the area of Computers and Human Interaction. Most recently, his research agenda has included investigations into the playing and effects of Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Games.

  While at the MSSM, Dr. Brown has coauthored seven, professional, conference papers with students over a four year period. Students have presented at International conferences in New York City, Washington, D.C.; Barcelona, Spain; Honolulu, HI; and Quebec City, Canada.

  His Computer Science Seminar course is currently working on researching the phenomena of electronic social networking.
