Joseph "Don" Cyr

  • Bio

    Mr. Cyr was born in Edmundston, New Brunswick and grew up in Presque Isle, Maine. He attended college in the University of Maine system where he earned a BS in History, a BA in Art, and a BA in English. He has an M. Ed in History and is completing a Ph.D. in American History with majors in Material Culture, Canadian-American Studies, and Art History. Mr. Cyr is the president of the Association Culturelle et Historique du Mont-Carmel that is operating a museum and cultural center dedicated to the preservation and development of French Acadian culture. Mr. Cyr is an active artist and an expert in Acadian history and culture. He is also interested in historic preservation, and is active in the restoration of historic buildings. Mr. Cyr has traveled in Europe a number of times studying art history and has an extensive collection of art history slides and stories. He teaches history at MSSM and is adjunct faculty at both the University of Maine in Presque Isle and the University of Maine. He is also active in the cultural life of Maine , serving on the board of directors of the Maine Arts Commission and many boards of cultural organizations in Maine.
