MSSM Takes 2nd Place at the Regional Drama Festival

MSSM's entry "Mysteries and Smaller Pieces" is an avant garde performance created in 1964 by The Living Theatre, of which Stefan Dreisbach-Williams, Theatre Instructor is an active member -in fact he performed this piece with The Living Theatre at the Malta International Theatre festival in Poznan, Poland this past summer.

The show included a scene in which Andrea Jarrett, Limington, stood at attention for about ten minutes. In another piece Adaeze Olugbemi, Presque Isle, sang an improvised raga. Cait Charles, Cape Elizabeth, led the audience in chants demanding peace, an end to the snow, less homework and anything else the audience offered in response to her question: "What do you want?" Sammy Jelin, Kennebunkport, and the company moved through the audience wafting scent over them with sandalwood fans while humming lightly in the dark. Then the collective recited a poem with a text taken from a dollar bill.

The performance was created collectively by Caitlyn Charles, Andrea Jarrett, Sammy Jelin and Adaeze Olugbemi. Mr. Dreisbach-Williams served as faculty advisor, helping them research the script and work out their collective process. Kristina Yurko, Freeport, ran lights. Both Adaeze Olugbemi and Andrea Jarrett received special citations as did the ensemble as a whole.

A number of MSSM students were present at the performance and participated in various spontaneous ways. Former MSSM student, Matt Potvin, Fort Kent, featured prominently in some of these spontaneous acts. Cathy and Ted Bowker and Dr. Manju Prakash accompanied the students.
