MSSM Students Featured at the Hall of Flags

On Monday March 17th, 9am-3pm, students from the Maine School of Science and Mathematics showcased their work to legislators. Students, faculty, and staff received a warm welcome from the Aroostook County delegates. Rep. Judy Paradis was on hand throughout the day, discussing the MSSM’s students’ achievements. Governor Baldacci spoke to the students about the wonderful work being done at the MSSM and noted that Catherine Riley, a graduate of the MSSM, is an economist for the State of Maine.

Rep. Judy Paradis visited with students and facilitated their introduction to the House and Senate. Featured exhibits included work done with Jackson Laboratories in Computational Biology by instructor Deb McGann and student Renee Symonds(Belgrade), a scientific Soils Research study at Schoodic Point done by student Emily Pike(Bowdoin), architectural plans and renderings from an internship at Stantec by Dan Freedman(Caribou), a job shadow bulletin from Sunday River mountain operations intern Caleb Davis (Solon), and, a student Tony Nuzzo’s(Litchfield) up close look at The Telford Group’s Airbus Project.

Students were on hand to discuss the unique and academically challenging opportunities provided at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics. There were also interactive displays in “Geometric Adventures” by Corey Sarsfield (Brooklin) and Arya Poppema-Bannon( Cumberland), “Cryptic Alchemy” with Tyler Beaulieu (Caribou), and “Puppetry” with Sarah Cropley (Topsham) and Ashley Hunt (Naples). Exhibits were also presented by Ryan Keating(York), Kristin Thornton(Waterboro),Alexandra Holcombe(Caribou), Victor Tardiff (Augusta), Kristina Yurko(Freeport), and Una Huang (Readfield).

Throughout the Hall of Flags, legislators and visitors read “Profiles in Excellence”, highlighting the MSSM’s Alumni Accomplishments. Alumni describe in their own words the impact the MSSM has had on their lives.

The Hall of Flags Day celebration continued with an evening event at the Senator Inn, “Investing in Maine’s Future”, where the keynote speaker was Mr. Alan Caron, GrowSmart Maine. He spoke about the importance of science and mathematics education in Maine’s Innovation Economy. Supporters and Volunteers of the MSSM were recognized and honored for their efforts.

The MSSM is a public residential magnet school chartered and funded by the Maine State Legislature. A residential community committed to the pursuit of academic excellence, the MSSM provides an extensive and challenging curriculum in science, mathematics, technology, and the arts and humanities. The MSSM was created by the 116th Maine Legislature in 1995 and is a member of the National Consortium of Specialized Secondary Schools of Science, Mathematics, and Technology.
