MSSM NewsMSSM Leadership Change2009-06-30On Saturday, June 27, the Board of Trustees of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics accepted, with deep regrets, Mr. Walter Warner’s resignation as Executive Director. Mr. Warner leaves to become President of the Charter School of Wilmington, a 955-student science and mathematics college-preparatory school in Delaware. Since his arrival four years ago Mr. Warner has worked tirelessly for the Maine School of Science and Mathematics. With his leadership we have expanded our excellent academic offerings in the humanities, science, and mathematics, have increased the number of advanced placement courses, and have improved the residential life program and facilities. Walt has supported and advocated for our excellent faculty and students, and has recruited one of the largest classes in the history of the school. He also has broadened and systematized college counseling, built from the ground up a completely new accounting system, improved the communication infrastructure within the MSSM community, and forged strong relations with the communities of the Limestone Area. During his term as Director, MSSM gained long-deserved recognition by U. S. News and World Report as the twelfth-ranked high school in the country. His wife, Laurie Dunlap, served as school nurse and expanded the medical care options for our students. During their first year Walt and Laurie lived in the dormitory and Walt has even been seen mowing the lawns. Because Mr. Warner has built such an efficient administrative team, I am confident the change to a new Executive Director will proceed smoothly. The Board of Trustees has authorized its Executive Committee to appoint a Search Committee for a new Executive Director and to work with Mr. Warner and his staff to develop a Transition Plan to move MSSM into its new phase of development. We know we can rely on the remarkable good will and support among our faculty, students, parents, and alumni and look forward to working with them as our plans come together. I hope you will join me and the Board of Trustees in expressing our deepest appreciation for Mr. Warner’s service. He and Laurie have contributed much to our community. We wish them well. Sincerely, Dr. David Haines Board Chair |
