Public Announcement of MSSM Transition Team

2009-07-30

A few hours after Mr. Warner's resignation at the end of June, the MSSM Board of Trustees authorized the Executive Committee of the MSSM Board of Trustees to begin work immediately on the transition to a new executive director. Our plans for the transition are well underway and I want to give you an update on our progress.

It won't surprise you to hear that within days of Mr. Warner's departure I received e-mail from several people who are already interested in replacing him. MSSM's national reputation assures that we will have many highly-qualified candidates once we begin to advertise. We will soon appoint a search committee for a new Executive Director, about which you will hear more later.

New academic appointments follow the school year calendar, so it is unlikely that a new director will be in place before June, 2010. For this reason we have appointed a Transition Team of Cathy Bowker, David Brown, and Dale Dintaman, three experienced and well-qualified people with years of experience, to take over the day-to-day operation of the school. Cathy, as Acting Executive Director, is responsible for signing checks and contracts and taking other legal actions on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

We have also created a new position, Director of External Relations, to help with the search for a new director and to work on projects outside of Limestone. I am excited to announce that Kate Reilly, an MSSM alumna, has agreed to take this position. Kate completed a graduate degree in Economics at Fordham University and for the past four years was the State Economist in the Maine State Planning Office.

In addition to working on the search, Kate will help with the Board's new program to raise money to supplement room and board costs for our students. Several parents and board members have already signed on to work with Vice Chair Jerry Pieh on this exciting initiative. That Jerry already has in these difficult times raised a significant amount of money is a testament not only to Jerry's energy and enthusiasm, but to the Maine-wide belief in and support for MSSM. Kate is also well-positioned to help us maintain our already close connections with Maine government and to speak with authority on the important contribution MSSM makes to the State of Maine. Kate will also work with us on other external projects, including several other fund-raising initiatives.

Finally, thank you for your continuing confidence in MSSM. As a former president of the MSSM Parents Group and parent of three MSSM graduates, I know well the meaning and significance of the MSSM experience. I look forward to working with you as we continue to lead this wonderful school into the future.

Dr. David Haines

Board Chair
