MSSM NewsMaine Humanities Council Recognizes MSSM Student Una Huang2009-08-27Una Huang, a contestant and second place winner in this year’s Letters About Literature competition is an exemplary student here at MSSM. Despite its name the MSSM is not based only on the “hard sciences” as they are often called. A third year senior at MSSM, Una is an example of this balance between academic disciplines. Not only is this Una’s third year attending MSSM, but her third year winning second place in the 2009 Letters About Literature Contest.
This year Una chose to direct her letter to Louisa May Alcott the author of Little Women, and how being a single child she can relate to this tale and how it helped her to get through rough times in her life. Una despite winning second place out of the 1,500 who competed for the third year in a row was still as surprised as the first time she won.
Obviously this Senior has tremendous potential as a writer, yet when asked what her plans were after leaving the MSSM she replied, “I plan on either going into Pre. Med or majoring in Computer Science, and possibly a minor in French or Theater.” Una being an exemplary student in all of her subjects has many choices of where she wants to go, and what she wants to do, partially because of her innate gifts, but also due to the intense training she has had the MSSM. A challenge is what she called it, one that has proven difficult yet rewarding. After the MSSM there is very little that scares a graduate, especially one as well prepared as Una Huang.
Along with Una in the winner’s circle are Klass Pruiksma and Madeline Blaisdell who will be at the MSSM for their first semester this year.
