Gubernatorial Candidate Eliot Cutler Visits MSSM

2009-10-29

LIMESTONE — Independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler visited the Maine School of Science and Mathematics today in Limestone. Cutler toured the school’s academic building and residence hall, met informally with faculty, staff and students and addressed the entire student body during a noontime ‘town hall’ question and answer session.

Cutler wrapped up his visit with a lunch meeting with members of the MSSM student senate.

“The Maine School of Science and Mathematics is a shining example of something we are doing right,” Cutler said. “The school provides some of Maine’s best and brightest students with an academic setting that is both challenging and engaging, and there is much we can learn about better preparing our youth for a fast-changing, competitive global economy.”

During his remarks to the student body, Cutler talked about the importance of innovative investments in education and the importance of creating career opportunities for all young people in Maine. He also urged the students of MSSM to continue challenging themselves as they pursue post-secondary educations and career opportunities.

Cutler toured the school as part of a visit to Aroostook County, where he met with farmers, business leaders and educators.

“I was impressed by what I saw and heard from the students I met,” Cutler said. “We need more of this in Maine. We need a stronger, more focused 21st Century education plan that includes charter schools and opportunities like those found within the walls of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics. And we need to do a better job of connecting the dots between a quality education and job opportunities here in Maine.”

Eliot Cutler, a resident of Cape Elizabeth and a native of Bangor, announced the formation of an exploratory committee in late August. He is expected to make a formal announcement about running for Governor of Maine as an Independent in the next few weeks.
