H1N1 Update-11/3/09

2009-11-03

After receiving updated information from the Maine and National CDCs, we find it necessary to revise our original H1N1/ Flu Prevention, Assessment, and Treatment Plan.

New information indicates that our staff will not have access to the vaccine thus putting them at greater risk for catching H1N1. We have several younger staff members, including the RIs, and a few staff members who have young children at home. Since we have such a small staff, having only three or four of them out means we will have to suspend classes and send all students home.

The new procedure is as follows:

Any student presenting with a fever of 100 degrees or higher will go to the health center to be tested for both the seasonal flu and H1N1. The student will remain in the health center so as to avoid exposing other students/staff. If the student tests positive for either the seasonal flu or H1N1 (or both), he/she will need to return home for the duration of the illness. The student will remain in the health center until the parent is able to pick him/her up. MSSM will not be able to transport the student home; it will be the parent's responsibility to come to MSSM to get the student.

Once the student has been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications, he/she will be allowed to return to MSSM.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
