Regional Gatherings

One successful tradition in the MSSM Parents’ Association that continues to grow is how parents gather together at Regional Gatherings informal potluck meals and conversation.

Our definition:

“The gatherings are an informal and relaxed opportunity for MSSM parents to gather together and socialize with members of the MSSM community. Usually a potluck affair, but it can be brunch, dinner, or appetizers. We encourage inviting current parents; both first year and veterans, alumni parents, BOT members, MSSM Foundation, Administrators, faculty, and even local political representatives.”

Who can hold an event?

      • Any parent in the MSSM PA can host an event

How many people go to these events?

      • Events can range from 3-20+ people - The host sets the limit

Why do we think these gatherings are important?

      • Our unique school community spans the state, country, and world. Distance can obviously be isolating for those that do not have local contacts with other MSSMers. Talking face to face brings out the sense of community, but also allows for frank discussions and comparing notes on our experiences with MSSM. Some interesting topics and ideas grow from these interactions as well as new friendships.

Creating and advertising your gathering

  • Check in with the PA: We can let you know who else is organizing in your area
  • Create a Facebook event page on the MSSM PA group page.
  • Contact one of the PA executive committee to help spread the word with a school wide email.
  • Use the map of parent locations to reach via email out to a select group in your area. (The map is on our Facebook page) If you are not on Facebook, contact the PA and we will help.
  • Let the Parent Association know if you would like to have the MSSM Executive Director, Foundation CEO, Board of Trustees members or faculty invited to attend.

Bottom Line

Regional Gatherings are all about connecting and having conversations. It is an opportunity to relax and enjoy some food and friendly talk. Connecting on Facebook or in an email is convenient and quick, but sitting down with your fellow MSSM parents and community members can create lifelong connections. We encourage you to host a gathering or drop in on one in your area. Feel free to contact any member of the PA executive committee if you have any questions.

FAQs for MSSM Parents & Students

Local Fare

Welcome to the first in a series of FAQs about the amazing community of MSSM. Students often ask where they can go to get a treat or a different meal than what the cafeteria offers. In this post we will touch on some food resources in the Limestone community.

Food is an important issue for most of us, student and parent alike. It is where we can often find comfort as it nourishes our bodies and souls. Food encompasses a great range of topics not just meals, snacks, and desserts. A birthday typically revolves around the cake that displays the lit candles representing future wishes. A holiday is marked by specific foods and traditions be it matzah or lumpy gravy.

Students at MSSM are transitioning from their homemade cuisine to a cafeteria fare which is quite a leap. The MSSM cafeteria works hard to incorporate local foods and offers a range of different dishes. Some students love the fact that MSSM is in the heart of potato country and potatoes are a staple while others may not be so enthusiastic. Below are some options to augment the student diet.

AL Bear’s

Right on main street, this is the hub of quick grub. One of the owners, Michelle Albert, is a member of the Board of Trustees for MSSM and a true supporter of our school.

Offerings: Pizza, sandwiches, burgers and deep fried goodness(French fries, pickles and mac and cheese bites). (207) 325-2114

The staff at Al Bear’s are extremely friendly and will accept credit card payment over the phone if you want to buy your penguin a pizza. Delivery is not a certainty, but if you ask they may be able to deliver to the dorms.

Mike’s Market

A jam packed grocery store just down at the end of main street. Produce, meats, dairy and frozen foods are bountiful. The dorms and the Manor have kitchens with cooking equipment available to the budding chef or the ramen connoisseur.

The dorms and the manor have wagons available for students to cart their booty back to the dorm. (Courtesy of the MSSM PA!)

Gwen’s Gourmet

A local bakery and also an MSSM parent who creates baked goodies and delivers them to the school. Check out their FB page for pictures of cookies and cakes. Give them a call to learn more about this handy service. (207) 498-0188

Stay tuned as we venture further afield to Caribou, Presque Isle and beyond...
