Anthony Scott as Audrey II Live!

Anthony Scott as Audrey II Live!
MSSM teacher playing a part in The Little Shop of Horrors play at UMPI

Anthony Dolan Scott took on a different role when he played the part of Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors at UMPI, a performance presented by Broadway Kids After Dark, based on Howard Ashman's book and lyrics with music by Alan Menken. Known at MSSM for teaching advanced literature since 2017, Scott brought his dynamic stage presence as the lead singer of Star City Syndicate to this sinister, comical role. Being a small production, Scott also played other background characters. Audrey II, the monstrous, ever-hungry plant with a manipulative personality, is central to the story’s dark humor and moral undertones. Scott's interpretation of Audrey II was both captivating and chilling, his vocal performance adding depth to the plant’s insidious demands and Seymour’s moral descent.

Scott’s natural command of storytelling and language—skills that earned him the 2023 MCELA English Teacher of the Year award—shone through his portrayal, allowing audiences to feel both amused and disturbed by Audrey II’s sinister charisma. His background in music and literature added layers to the character, bringing a fresh interpretation to Menken’s memorable score. Scott’s Audrey II didn’t just lure Seymour but fully entranced the audience, showcasing his talent beyond the classroom and affirming his versatile artistry in both performance and education.
