Dual Nominations

Dual Nominations

Alden Hughes, a senior at Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) and a Cape Elizabeth native, has been nominated for admission to both the United States Naval Academy (USNA) and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). These nominations, secured from Congresswoman Chellie Pingree and Senators Susan Collins and Angus King, highlight Alden’s academic excellence, leadership, and dedication to service.

“I am ecstatic to have gotten the nomination,” Alden shared. “It’s a really big step in the appointment process to a U.S. Service Academy. Getting one nomination would have been a major achievement, but to get nominations for both of my top schools was a really big deal.”

Alden, who serves as a Residential Assistant and Student Senator at MSSM, hopes to attend the USNA and pursue a career as a surface warfare officer in the Navy. Long-term, he envisions transitioning to a federal law enforcement role. Both academies are known for their rigorous academic and leadership programs, preparing students for careers in military and maritime service.

His achievements reflect not only his personal dedication but also the supportive community at MSSM. As Alden moves closer to his dream of serving his country, he continues to inspire his peers and demonstrate the values of leadership and excellence.
