Language Meets STEM

Although math and science are in our name, MSSM offers a full education that goes far beyond the reach of STEM alone. We offer immersive language programs in both Spanish and French as part of our comprehensive curriculum at this 9-12 boarding school, developing well-rounded global learners. The Spanish classes in our program are progressive, and the students learn to communicate basic ideas in Spanish 1 by building proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In Spanish 3, students proceed to the more dynamic and creative use of language; discuss debatable topics, state their opinion, while the class is predominantly conducted in Spanish. In French, our advanced classes are taught in almost entirely the language, exposing students to French literature, film, and culture. For instance, In French 311, students engage in a total immersion STEM experience conducted entirely in French. The class covers subjects such as cellular biology, dendrology, chemistry, and advanced mathematics. Then, in the fourth-year class, students analyze French novels, study history, and even write poetry-all in French. By the fifth year, the French curriculum is almost 100% immersive, whereby students work independently to extend their knowledge of Francophone studies and prepare for university-level language classes. At MSSM, we strive to help our students excel in math and science while acquiring those vital language skills that are essential in this ever-shrinking world.
