MSSM Shines at YIG

Over Veterans' Day weekend, MSSM students excelled at the Maine Youth in Government program in Augusta, earning top leadership roles and prestigious awards. Mia Shaw, from Presque Isle, was elected Youth Governor, while Elena Wirth, from Portland, won Best Bill. Eva Ociepka, from Belfast, served as President of the Senate, with Annabelle Wainman, from Kennebunkport, as Secretary, and Aubrey Ainsworth, from Fort Fairfield, as Assistant Secretary. Samantha Butts, from Brunswick, served as Speaker of the House, and key committee chairs included Quinn Daly, Pipsa Pope, and Ahliya Roy.

Notable roles also included Elliott Dooley, from Blue Hill, as State Treasurer; Phoenix Benica, from Durham, as Commissioner of Education; and Alden Hughes, from Cape Elizabeth, as Senate Chair for Transportation and Technology. Additionally, Ahliya Roy and Ace Moberly were selected as Supreme Court Justices for next year, while Hurst Burnett and Anne Dostie served as Supreme Court Advocates.

Maine Youth in Government provides a three-day immersive experience where students simulate Maine's democratic process by drafting legislation, debating policies, and developing leadership skills. This opportunity fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and civic responsibility, preparing students to be informed citizens and future leaders.
