Penguins vs. Bears

The MSSM Penguins opened their 2025 soccer season on Sept. 2nd in Limestone with a couple of close-contested matches against the Easton Bears. Although both sides lost on the scoreboards, there were enough good highlights to work on as the season got underway.

While we lost, there were some positives in the game. The team stuck together and never gave up. They performed a tidier second half and left the field looking ahead to the season.

The boys, coached by Santiago "Santi" Durango, began at 5 PM and lost 5-2 to Maine's #2-ranked team, Easton, last year. Junior Easton Allen put the Penguins on the scoreboard first, and freshman Zander Mussman added a second score in the 2nd half. Coach Durango stated, "While we lost, there were some positives in the game. The team stuck together and never gave up. They performed a tidier second half and left the field looking ahead to the season."

Durango went on to state that this season's team will focus on building skills, sharpening communication, and sticking with the game plan. He added that MSSM was the one that scored first in this game, a big difference from last season when the Penguins lost their two games to Easton 8-0 and 5-0.

The girls, with coach Valerie Chavez, took the field at 7 PM and battled to a close 1-0 loss. While the scorebook did not go their way, it was a heartening performance by a team still finding itself in the early going of the season.

The Penguins return to the field this Friday night at home, as the boys take on Madawaska. Both the boys and girls are on the field on Tuesday, September 9th, in Limestone playing Fort Fairfield, the #5 team from Maine last year. The girls start at 5 PM, and then the boys start at 7 PM.
