Sharing Cultures

Sharing Cultures

This past Saturday, a group of MSSM students traveled to UMaine in Orono for CultureFest with Señora Carson. The event brought together students and community members from many backgrounds. It offered a chance to learn directly from people who shared their food, music, and traditions.

Our students sampled dishes from around the world. They listened to performances. They visited cultural displays prepared by student groups. They asked questions and had real conversations. Each table offered something new. Many students talked about how much they learned simply by listening.

Señora Carson encouraged students to speak with others in Spanish when possible. Some did. Others tried new words and practiced with the help of friendly volunteers. Language comes alive when used with peers, and the day provided that chance in a relaxed setting.

We look forward to more opportunities that connect our students with the wider Maine community and the global community that reaches far beyond it.
