Tallarines Verdes

Tallarines Verdes

Señora Carson’s Spanish I class brought culture to the kitchen on Wednesday as students learned how to prepare tallarines verdes, a well-known Peruvian dish from her home country. The recipe features pasta coated in a green sauce made from spinach, basil, onion, garlic, and queso fresco blended with a bit of milk. The result is a flavorful dish that many Peruvian families make at home.

This hands-on cooking project counts for 20 percent of each student’s final grade this semester. During class, students read the complete ingredient list and cooking steps in Spanish, then worked together to prepare the dish within the 8:30 to 9:25 class block. The goal was to help students practice fundamental vocabulary in a real situation.

For homework, students will cook the dish again at home with their family over Thanksgiving break. They need to take photos of each step to show their process and understanding. This extension helps reinforce the language, gives families a look at what students are learning, and builds confidence in the kitchen.
