Why We Run

Why We Run

MSSM students don’t just distinguish themselves in the classroom; they do so on the court, field, and trails as well. Cross Country is one of those opportunities, and this fall we asked our runners a simple question: Why do you run?

The answers were as varied as the athletes themselves. Junior Seth Lein admitted he runs “because someone convinced me to.” Sophomore Edward Packard, roommate to Sophomore Rafi Halpern, responded, “Because Rafi told me to,” while Rafi said, “Because it’s fun.” Perhaps the best summation came from Sophomore Ethan Young, who noted, “Why do I run? Because it’s the best thing ever.” To see the YouTube short, click here.

For students, athletics at MSSM are about more than just winning or losing. Sports are a chance to challenge yourself, relieve stress, make friends, or even try something completely new. Running is no exception. Cross Country builds not just endurance, but also teamwork, resilience, and the confidence to push beyond your comfort zone.

At MSSM, athletics are open to everyone—from beginners lacing up for the first time to runners chasing personal bests. And when you ask our Cross Country athletes why they run, the real answer is simple: because it matters to them.
