Mathematics
MSSM’s Mathematics Department offers students a strong foundation in mathematical principles, with the ultimate goal of every student completing Calculus (or higher) prior to graduation. Students are able to take college-level math classes each year at MSSM, with many students completing Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra by the time they graduate. Discussion of math applications in other disciplines is also an important component of our program.
All students participate in the American Math Competition exam (AMC-10, AMC-12). Those who score well are then eligible for the American Invitational Math Exam (AIME), which leads to the Mathematical Olympiad Program.
Math Team
Be a Mathlete! Students on MSSM’s Math Team hone their love of mathematics in competitions affiliated with the Maine Association of Math Leagues (MAML) and the New England Math League (NEML). MSSM regularly places in the top 5 (with many first place finishes) in both of these programs.
Through the AMC and AIME qualifying exams a number of MSSM students have also represented the State of Maine at the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) competition, held each year at Penn State University.
