Parents’ Association Membership: Frequently Asked Questions

Who can be a member? Just having a child at MSSM makes you a member. There are no fees associated with being a member of the Parents’ Association.

Do you have meetings? Yes, we have meetings twice a year. We have one meeting in the fall during parent conferences in October and one meeting in the spring during family weekend (TBA). Parents are encouraged to attend. We also have regional get togethers where parents offer to host others at their home. These are informal and a great way to get connected with other parents that have children at MSSM. You can pick which regional meeting you would like to go to or you can attend them all.

How can I donate to the Parents’ Association? All donations go through the MSSM Foundation. If you want to make a donation for a PA event, activity, or fund please indicate in the memo section of the check. You can also go to the school website to donate online.

What is the MSSM Foundation? The MSSM Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization that raises funds to help advance the mission of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics.

How can I help with the different activities? All parents are invited to help with a wide variety of activities throughout the year. There will be sign up sheet at the MSSMPA table during registration as well as both fall and spring PA meetings. Watch your emails and the FB page for more information or contact a PA executive board member.

2018-2019 Parents’ Association Events

Cookie Caper: (January) Who doesn't want to shower their kid with dozens of cookies? This is one of the kids' favorite activities. Parents come up for a day or two and spend time together. There is a cookie decorating station that the kids can use or wait until they are all presented in the lounge where they can take many plates back to their rooms.

Prom: (May) Just because the school is small does not mean the kids want their prom to be small! Prom is open to all classes and the planning is done mostly by students with some funding assistance from the MSSMPA. Many parents come to school during prom to help get the kids ready and some just come for pictures. There are also some opportunities for parents to volunteer during prom (if your child will let you).

Teacher Appreciation: (May) We put together a week of surprises for our teachers at MSSM. It could include coffee and baked goods one day, massages another, and maybe some words of encouragement the next. Every year we try to find a new way to show our appreciation. There are many opportunities to help with this so watch for our inquiries in your email.

Senior’s Week and Graduation Reception: (May) MSSM PA sponsor a week of special treats for seniors as well as hosts a reception in the gym with food and decorations. It is a chance for seniors, family and friends to gather before the senior banquet.

Clynk Bags: (Ongoing) Don’t forget to grab a bag or two and help support MSSM. Drop your full bag to the clynk box at any Hannaford store and the money will be donated to the MSSM foundation.

Monetary Help: (Ongoing) The Parents’ Association is given a yearly allotment from the MSSM Foundation. Additional money may also be donated to the foundation and earmarked for specific PA endeavors.

In addition to the events above the PA supports many other activities such as…

    • Board of Trustees and Parents’ Association Soiree
    • Prom and “Non Prom” - activities for those who do not go to Prom
    • Pizza Night during Finals
    • Kitchen Supplies for the dorms
    • Regional get-togethers for parents
    • Miscellaneous items that are requested by the student clubs
    • Open house participation
