Howard Family Speakers

On March 29th, 2024, the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) welcomed back one of its most distinguished alumni, Dr. Tom Giblin, Class of 1999. Dr. Giblin, a professor of Physics at Kenyon College, returned to his alma mater to deliver the inaugural lecture in the Howard Family Speaker Series, titled "Time Has Meaning: What the Night Sky Tells Us About Particle Physics."

In his talk, Dr. Giblin captivated the audience by exploring how observations of the night sky can reveal profound insights into the nature of matter, energy, space, and time. As an expert in theoretical and numerical high energy physics and cosmology, he shared his passion for using high-performance computing to study the physics of the early universe, with a focus on involving undergraduate students in his groundbreaking research.

"The Universe is a mystery, but it is also a generous source of data and revelation," said Dr. Giblin. "I am honored to return to MSSM and share how we can decode the signals from the night sky to uncover the fundamental truths about our physical world."

The Howard Family Speaker Series was established by the MSSM Foundation to bring distinguished academics, professionals, and practitioners to the school, inspiring students to consider careers in public service and the STEM fields. Dr. Giblin's captivating talk was a fitting inaugural event, showcasing the immense talent and accomplishments of MSSM's alumni.
