The MSSM STEM Summer Camp is different in that we are not a sports camp, we don’t have a lake or canoes, but we do have four Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math classes as well as some traditional summer camp fun. Our camp is for boys and girls age 10-14.
We are located in beautiful Aroostook county in the town of Limestone. We are connected to Maine School of Science and Mathematics. The camp is on the MSSM campus and uses the academic building for classes and the dorm for overnight campers. We have a limited 24-seat bus that drops off and picks up campers along I-95 starting at Maine Mall in South Portland and then stops along the way up to Limestone. This year it will only stop at rest areas (for bathroom breaks) and pick up through Bangor.
This year the camp goes for four weeks (Sunday through Saturday) from June 27th to July 24th. Campers can attend 1-2 weeks. Boys’ Week 1 (ages 10-13) starts June 27th, then Boys’ Week 2 (ages 11-14) from July 4th. Girls’ Week 1 (ages 11-14) starts July 11th and Girls’ Week 2 (ages 10-13) starts July 18th.
We started as a way to get more girls into STEM fields, but have expanded to boys and girls. In 2019, we had a co-ed week, but this year we are going with 4 weeks with boys first and girls second. We love seeing campers’ minds explode when they learn some new technology exists. Our classes give them confidence in learning new things as they are not expected to know anything before getting here. We teach them everything from the ground up. Classes have included CSI, Computer Programming, 3D Printing, Minecraft Mars, Solving Rubik’s Cube (and Cube Art), Model Rockets, Catapult Engineering, LEGO Robotics, Calculus in a Week, and more.
We hire ex-campers as Mentors and ex-mentors as Counselors. The camp instructors are usually educators from around Maine who love teaching and have a passion for STEM education.
Usually there is a day camp option, but this year we are limiting it to 55 overnight campers only. The cost for one week is $750. We have limited financial aid and some scholarships. There is a $100 non-refundable deposit due at sign up. The bus is $30 each way and also non-refundable.
Outside of the classroom, we have activities such as Gaga pit, Monster Night, theme days, waterslide, NERF wars, tie dye, board games, and camp-family activities. Campers that stay for 2 weeks will have some additional activities on Saturday.
What do past parents say:
Thank you so much for all that you have done these last 3 years for my daughter! She cried when we picked her up as she didn’t want to leave her new friends. She talked our ear off the whole 4.5-hour trip home about her amazing classes, all that she learned, and extra activities. She then spent the remainder of Saturday face-timing her new friends and talking about their fun together. She has made some arrangements to meet up with them next week and is already saying she is staying 2 weeks next year and hopes to attend school there some day. I hope you and your staff understand what a difference you make in the lives of these young minds; I cannot thank you enough.
